Ubuntu now available for Smartphones

Canonical officially announced new, mobile version of their OS Ubuntu. The First phones with the Ubuntu OS are expected to come in the Q4 of 2013 or Q1 of 2014.

The Mobile version is base on Linux but doesn’t require Java Virtual Machine (JVM) which means that it should show better performance than Android. Canonical promised that they won’t make the mistake Google did with Android – fragmentation. Anyway the base of the OS remains unchanged which is good news for the developers. The Mobile version of Ubuntu will support all drivers written for Android, so that if you have the Google OS you can install Ubuntu. Currently Ubuntu can be installed on x86 and ARM processors. In addition Ubuntu will allow some mobile devices to connect to mouse, keyboard or monitor.

Canonical will perform a live demo at the upcoming CES conference next month in Las Vegas.
